Syndecrete
Environmental Features
Syndecrete®
is a restorative product, reconstituting materials extracted from
society's waste stream to create a new, highly valued product. Syndecrete
was developed by Syndesis as an alternative to limited or nonrenewable
natural materials such as wood or stone, and synthetic petroleum based
solid and laminating materials. Like standard concrete, Syndecrete
is chemically inert, and is not subject to out-gassing. Syndecrete
can incorporate 41% recycled or recovered materials from industry
and post-consumer goods. Fly ash, a powder residue that results from
the combustion of pulverized coal in electric power generating plants,
is added by 15% to displace the cement base. Polypropylene fiber,
a recovered off-fall scrap with a three dimensional reinforced matrix
increases the tensile strength of the product and gives it a physical
property akin to wood.
Aggregates, added to vary the texture and appearance of the product,
have included recycled materials such as metal shavings, H.D.P.E.
plastic regrinds, recycled glass chips, and scrap wood chips, creating
a contemporary reinterpretation of the Italian tradition of terrazzo.
Scrap materials are actively sourced from local businesses and curb
side recycling centers.
Syndecrete is certified as a recycled product by the Californians
Against Waste Foundation, and has been referred by environmental consultants
for use by chemically sensitive persons.
