Syndecrete® can be used in both interior and exterior conditions. Recent uses include the design, fabrication and installation of bathtubs, sinks, counter tops, bars, tabletops, interior and exterior floor tiles, fireplaces, signage, landscape elements and accessories. Syndecrete® is used in residential and commercial applications, including restaurants, hotels, retail stores, hospitals, universities and business offices.

Syndecrete®'s unique aesthetic properties are at once humble and elegant. It has the visual and tactile substantiality and practical utility appropriate to the honest nature of the material. Integral pigmentation and aggregate mix allow for a lightfast variation of unlimited colors and textures, and even distribution throughout each piece. To date, Syndecrete® has developed 11 standard colors and a has library of over 300 custom colors and mix designs. Aggregates, added to vary the texture and appearance of the product, have included natural materials such as ground abalone shells, California stones, indigenous eucalyptus leaves and acorns, as well as recycled and industrial scrap products, such as plastic chips, bottled glass, tempered glass, brass screw shavings, and wood chips.

Each Syndecrete® piece is custom mixed, molded, hand poured and finished to project specifications at the Synde
crete facility in Santa Monica, California. Due to Syndecrete®'s unique physical properties, large monolithic sections can be cast in forms or molds, eliminating seams typical of sheet goods, as well as minimizing waste. These smooth, monolithic pieces are ideally suited to the clean, modern design sensibility of the Syndecrete's design team.

Syndecrete® surfaces are sanded to expose the aggregate and natural porosity of the material. Alternately, a multiplicity of surfaces are possible with exacting detail from the mold as "form finishes." These include wood grain, bubble wrap, metal, and glass. An FDA approved water-based acrylic sealer and wax are hand applied to render the surface impermeable to water and stains, while providing a natural finish.

Syndecrete® is a solid surfacing material developed by Synde
crete as an alternative to limited or nonrenewable natural materials such as wood and stone, and synthetic petroleum based solid and laminating materials such as Avonite or Corian. Unlike some petroleum based products, Syndecrete® is chemically inert, and is not subject to out-gassing. Syndecrete® is certified as a recycled product by the Californians Against Waste Foundation, and has been referred by environmental consultants for use by chemically sensitive persons.

Syndecrete® is a restorative product, reconstituting materials extracted from society's waste stream to create a new, highly valued product. The cement based composition contains natural minerals integrally reinforced with a polypropylene fiber, a waste product from carpet manufacturing. Fly ash, a residue resulting from the burning of coal to produce electricity, is added to the Syndecrete® mix, reducing cement consumption. Recycled materials such as metal shavings, plastic regrinds, recycled glass chips and scrap wood chips, are frequently used as aggregates, creating a contemporary reinterpretation of the Italian tradition of terrazzo. This use of recycled aggregates increases the public's awareness of the beauty and utility of many materials it presently perceives as unusable or non-aesthetic. The inclusion of these materials in a premium priced, elegant design product adds value to the materials, and hopefully inspires users to be open to other creative uses of recycled and "waste" materials.

Three companies with competitive products for which Syndecrete® is environmentally superior:

Syndecrete® can incorporate 30% recycled or recovered materials from industry and post-consumer goods. Fly ash, a powder residue (which is otherwise added to the waste stream) that results from the combustion of pulverized coal in electric power generating plants, is added by 20% to displace the cement base. Polypropylene fiber, a recovered off-fall scrap from the manufacture of carpets, is used to provide Syndecrete® with a three dimensional reinforcing matrix that increases the tensile strength of the product and provides physical properties that are more akin to wood than typical concrete. Water based acrylic sealers and waxes are used to provide a durable finish.

The appearance and texture of Syndecrete® can be varied by integrally mixing a wide variety of aggregates to create a contemporary terrazzo of recycled materials. Past uses have included plastic regrinds, crushed glass, wood chips, metal shavings, porcelain, and eyeglass frame centers. Syndesis, Inc. actively sources these scrap materials from local businesses.
